Facility Issues Facing Religious Communities

Situation 1:

Our motherhouse/provincialate is our home. The overall number of members in residence has decreased over the last several years. Many of our older members have difficulty residing at the motherhouse because of its design and condition. Operating costs are increasing, and some of the space is inefficiently utilized.

Questions:

• How can we establish our priorities in light of our mission and the needs of all of our members?
• Our financial resources are limited. How can we take care of our members’ needs and continue our mission?
• What alternative sources of financial support are available?

Situation 2:

We need to find alternative uses for some of our facilities and would like these various uses to support our ministries and especially the needs of our older members.

Questions:

• How can we inform our members, in a sensitive manner, that we may need to share the use or let go of this property?
• How can our community come to a consensus about the best use of our facilities without permanent bitterness and frustration?

Situation 3:

Our facility is in an isolated or blighted area. Potential users most likely would not be interested in leasing or buying our facility.

Questions:

• How can we learn of alternative uses for this property?

Situation 4:

Although we have decided to renovate our motherhouse for our members, we recognize that in the future we will not need all of the space for our own use.

Questions:

• Can the building be renovated in such a way that it would provide enough flexibility for multiple uses?
• Can any of these various users help finance the renovation and pay for some of the day-to-day operational expenses?
